HIV Awareness

An HIV/AIDS awareness session was conducted on 12th December 2025 for Guest Service Associate Food & Beverage at Don Bosco Tech Shillong center by Ms. Anisha Thangkhiew, Block Extension Educator (BEE), Mylliem Block. Her engaging and well-structured presentation aimed to impart accurate information, promote awareness, and reduce the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. She explained every aspect with clarity, ensuring the students grasped the subject with ease.

She began by explaining the meaning of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), emphasising that HIV weakens the immune system while AIDS represents the advanced stage of the infection. She then described the three stages of HIV—acute, chronic, and AIDS—helping students understand the progression of the disease.

The resource person elaborated on the modes of transmission, explaining that HIV spreads through unprotected sexual contact, sharing infected needles, contaminated blood transfusions, and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. She also addressed common myths and clarified that HIV does not spread through physical touch, hugging, sharing food or water, casual contact, mosquito bites, sweat, or tears, which helped dispel many misconceptions among the learners.

She highlighted the importance of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), noting that with timely diagnosis and consistent treatment, individuals living with HIV can lead long, healthy, and productive lives. She also shared relevant insights about the HIV situation in Meghalaya, stressing the importance of awareness, testing, and preventive measures within the community.

In her closing remarks, she encouraged students to foster compassion and respect for people living with HIV, underscoring that they deserve dignity, understanding, and equal treatment.

The session proved to be highly informative and impactful. Students gained a clearer understanding of HIV/AIDS, learned essential prevention practices, and developed a more empathetic and responsible outlook.
